“.. cos basketball courts in the summer got girls there.”
I’m late to the sneaker party but lately I have become rather excited about customising my Nikes. I’ve been searching for the right pair for quite some time but never found the right ones. All of the brands, not just Nike are too chunky or too garish. I want just the right mix of colour and dark.
Stumbling across the Nike app, I found a new way to design my own kicks. Choosing from 20 or more different styles you can get change the colour of the sole, the tongue and everything in between. You can even change the colour of the swoosh and add initials on the back.
What started as ‘just one pair’ has rapidly expanded to ‘just three pairs’, My justification is that the prices are barely more expensive than an off the shelf pair.
There is an element of guilt here, should I be buying these when there are plenty of sustainable sneakers brands on the market? I do have a pair of Giesswein Merino Runners, which are sort of sustainable the Merino Wool is shorn annually and the soles are EVA plastic which is a form of plastic that offers a ‘rubber like’ sole. These are comfortable and great for travelling but not so cool with an outfit.
My dress style, if you can call it that, has always been smart and good shoes have been a part of it. What felt wrong only a few years ago (wearing sneakers with that?) now seems to be the in thing. To quote Brian Ferry..
“Dressin’ fine, makin’ time
We breeze up and down the street
We get respect from people we meet”
I’m in with the ‘in’ crowd.
